Clinical Research by Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi

In November ’95 I presented a hypothesis known by the title : ‘Water Regulating Theory (Hayashi’s Model)’ in a US health magazine (3). It says that active oxygen could be scavenged or reduced by atomic hydrogen, which results in production of H2O to give again a birthplace for every life form (Fig1).

My hypothesis was born from the clinical observation study in our clinic.

Since May ’85 we have confirmed thousands of clinical improvements, obtained solely by exchanging drinking (as well as cooking water) from tap water to reduced water (tab.1).

Those improvements were very exciting and some of them were considered to be miraculous at that time, when Shirahata’s paper was not yet submitted. It should be remembered that such putrefied metabolites are the same ones which are produced as a result of putrefaction of protein. The difference lies only in the fact that the former putrefaction process is brought about by intestinal microbes, whereas the latter is brought about by airborne microbes (Fig.2, 3). Based on these facts, I proposed a hypothesis ‘Pre-and posthepatic Organ Theory’ in 1988, 1989 & 1990 at the International Symposium on ‘Man and His Environment in Health and Disease’ held at Dallas, Texas, USA (Fig.4).

I stated that, as it is impossible to purify the polluted water in the St.Laurence River without purifying the polluted water in Lake Ontario, so it should be impossible to improve the disorders of posthepatic organs, without trying to improve the disorder of prehepatic organs, namely putrefaction in gastrointestinal tract. Such clinical experiences have led us to recognize that reduced water is not only effective for restoration of intestinal flora metabolism, but also could be effective in scavenging active oxygen. Our clinical observation data, and my hypothesis, were delivered to Prof. Shirahata in April 1996 and his research has since started.

Shirahata’s paper means that cell metabolism, either microbial or cancerous, depends on its intracellular water, namely cell metabolism. This can vary according to the property of intracellular water, i.e. hydrogen-rich or not.. And even cancer cells might lose their characteristic feature of unlimited proliferation when they are immersed in hydrogen-rich water, originated and developed in Japan, but totally unknown in the past throughout the world. The solution might now be in our hands. Our ‘new water’ should be the first choice for all of us to take, as has been suggested by Happe, Shirahata and ourselves.

Now, there could be no wonder why such clinical improvements have been obtained.

In short, ‘ invisible reaction’ of active hydrogen against active oxygen was regulated at first. As a result of it, ‘visible reaction’, so-called clinical exam data as well as clinical symptoms have been improved.

Devices to produce reduced water were introduced into our clinic in May 1985. Based on the clinical experiences obtained in the past 15 years, it can be said that introduction of naturally reduced water (using H-01 Active Hydrogen Generator) or electrolyzed-reduced water for drinking and cooking purpose for in-patients should be the very prerequisite in our daily medical practices.

It is because any dietary recipe cannot be a scientific one if property of water taken by the patients is not taken into consideration.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Japan announced in 1965 that the intake of reduced water is effective for restoration of intestinal flora metabolism.

(This paper is based on electrolyzed-reduced water, but later found that the Hydrogen Producing Mineral Stick was actually more effective because with the electrolyzed-reduced water the water must be consumed immediately as the hydrogen gas dissipates quickly.)

Active oxygen species or free radicals are considered to cause extensive oxidative damage to biological macromolecules, which brings about a variety of diseases as well as aging. The ideal scavenger for active oxygen should be ‘active hydrogen’. ‘Active hydrogen’ can be produced in reduced water near the cathode during electrolysis of water. Reduced water exhibits high pH, low dissolved oxygen (DO), extremely high dissolved molecular hydrogen (DH), and extremely negative redox potential (RP) values. Strongly electrolyzed-reduced water, as well as ascorbic acid, (+)-catechin and tannic acid, completely scavenged O.-2 produced by the hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase (HX-XOD) system in sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of reduced water is stable at 4 degrees C for over a month and was not lost even after neutralization, repeated freezing and melting, deflation with sonication, vigorous mixing, boiling, repeated filtration, or closed autoclaving, but was lost by opened autoclaving or by closed autoclaving in the presence of tungsten trioxide which efficiently adsorbs active atomic hydrogen. Water bubbled with hydrogen gas exhibited low DO, extremely high DH and extremely low RP values, as does reduced water, but it has no SOD-like activity. These results suggest that the SOD-like activity of reduced water is not due to the dissolved molecular hydrogen but due to the dissolved atomic hydrogen (active hydrogen). Although SOD accumulated H2O2 when added to the HX-XOD system, reduced water decreased the amount of H2O2 produced by XOD. Reduced water, as well as catalase and ascorbic acid, could directly scavenge H2O2. Reduced water suppresses single-strand breakage of DNA b active oxygen species produced by the Cu(II)-catalyzed oxidation of ascorbic acid in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that reduced water can scavenge not only O2.- and H2O2, but also 1O2 and .OH.

Abstract

Acute oxidative stress induced by ischemia-reperfusion or inflammation causes serious damage to tissues, and persistent oxidative stress is accepted as one of the causes of many common diseases including cancer. We show here that hydrogen (H2) has potential as an antioxidant in preventive and therapeutic applications. We induced acute oxidative stress in cultured cells by three independent methods. H2 selectively reduced the hydroxyl radical, the most cytotoxic of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and effectively protected cells; however, H2 did not react with other ROS, which possess physiological roles. We used an acute rat model in which oxidative stress damage was induced in the brain by focal ischemia and reperfusion. The inhalation of H2 gas markedly suppressed brain injury by buffering the effects of oxidative stress. Thus H2 can be used as an effective antioxidant therapy; owing to its ability to rapidly diffuse across membranes, it can reach and react with cytotoxic ROS and thus protect against oxidative damage.

Abstract

Oxidative stress is recognized widely as being associated with various disorders including diabetes, hypertension, and atherosclerosis. It is well established that hydrogen has a reducing action. We therefore investigated the effects of hydrogen-rich water intake on lipid and glucose metabolism in patients with either type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study in 30 patients with T2DM controlled by diet and exercise therapy and 6 patients with IGT. The patients consumed either 900 mL/d of hydrogen-rich pure water or 900 mL of placebo pure water for 8 weeks, with a 12-week washout period. Several biomarkers of oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and glucose metabolism, assessed by an oral glucose tolerance test, were evaluated at baseline and at 8 weeks. Intake of hydrogen-rich water was associated with significant decreases in the levels of modified low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (ie, modifications that increase the net negative charge of LDL), small dense LDL, and urinary 8-isoprostanes by 15.5% (P < .01), 5.7% (P < .05), and 6.6% (P < .05), respectively. Hydrogen-rich water intake was also associated with a trend of decreased serum concentrations of oxidized LDL and free fatty acids, and increased plasma levels of adiponectin and extracellular-superoxide dismutase. In 4 of 6 patients with IGT, intake of hydrogen-rich water normalized the oral glucose tolerance test. In conclusion, these results suggest that supplementation with hydrogen-rich water may have a beneficial role in prevention of T2DM and insulin resistance.

“Consumption of Molecular Hydrogen Prevents the Stress-Induced Impairments in Hippocampus-Dependent Learning Tasks during Chronic Physical Restraint in Mice”

Abstract

We have reported that hydrogen (H2) acts as an efficient antioxidant by gaseous rapid diffusion. When water saturated with hydrogen (hydrogen water) was placed into the stomach of a rat, hydrogen was detected at several  M level in blood. Because hydrogen gas is unsuitable for continuous consumption, we investigated using mice whether drinking hydrogen water ad libitum, instead of inhaling hydrogen gas, prevents cognitive impairment by reducing oxidative stress. Chronic physical restraint stress to mice enhanced levels of oxidative stress markers, malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal, in the brain, and impaired learning and memory, as judged by three different methods: passive avoidance learning, object recognition task, and the Morris water maze. Consumption of hydrogen water ad libitum throughout the whole period suppressed the increase in the oxidative stress markers and prevented cognitive impairment, as judged by all three methods, whereas hydrogen water did not improve cognitive ability when no stress was provided. Neural proliferation in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus was suppressed by restraint stress, as observed by 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine incorporation and Ki-67 immunostaining, proliferation markers. The consumption of hydrogen water ameliorated the reduced proliferation although the mechanistic link between the hydrogen-dependent changes in neurogenesis and cognitive impairments remains unclear. Thus, continuous consumption of hydrogen water reduces oxidative stress in the brain, and prevents the stress-induced decline in learning and memory caused by chronic physical restraint. Hydrogen water may be applicable for preventive use in cognitive or other neuronal disorders.

It has been shown that molecular hydrogen (H2) acts as a therapeutic antioxidant and suppresses brain injury by buffering the effects of oxidative stress. Chronic oxidative stress causes neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease (PD). Here, we show that drinking H2-containing water significantly reduced the loss of dopaminergic neurons in PD model mice using both acute and chronic administration of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). The concentration-dependency of H2 showed that H2 as low as 0.08 ppm had almost the same effect as saturated H2 water (1.5 ppm). MPTP-induced accumulation of cellular 8-oxoguanine (8-oxoG), a marker of DNA damage, and 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE), a marker of lipid peroxidation were significantly decreased in the nigro-striatal dopaminergic pathway in mice drinking H2-containing water, whereas production of superoxide (O2•−) detected by intravascular injection of dihydroethidium (DHE) was not reduced significantly. Our results indicated that low concentration of H2 in drinking water can reduce oxidative stress in the brain. Thus, drinking H2-containing water may be useful in daily life to prevent or minimize the risk of life style-related oxidative stress and neurodegeneration.

 

Consumption of hydrogen water prevents atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E knockout mice

Abstract

Oxidative stress is implicated in atherogenesis; however most clinical trials with dietary antioxidants failed to show marked success in preventing atherosclerotic diseases. We have found that hydrogen (dihydrogen; H2) acts as an effective antioxidant to reduce oxidative stress [I. Ohsawa, M. Ishikawa, K. Takahashi, M. Watanabe, K. Nishimaki, K. Yamagata, K. Katsura, Y. Katayama, S, Asoh, S. Ohta, Hydrogen acts as a therapeutic antioxidant by selectively reducing cytotoxic oxygen radicals, Nat. Med. 13 (2007) 688–694]. Here, we investigated whether drinking H2-dissolved water at a saturated level (H2–water) ad libitum prevents arteriosclerosis using an apolipoprotein E knockout mouse (apoE−/−), a model of the spontaneous development of atherosclerosis. ApoE−/− mice drank H2–water ad libitum from 2 to 6 month old throughout the whole period. Atherosclerotic lesions were significantly reduced by ad libitum drinking of H2–water (p = 0.0069) as judged by Oil-Red-O staining series of sections of aorta. The oxidative stress level of aorta was decreased. Accumulation of macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions was confirmed. Thus, consumption of H2-dissolved water has the potential to prevent arteriosclerosis.

Molecular hydrogen alleviates nephrotoxicity induced by an anti-cancer drug cisplatin without compromising anti-tumor activity in mice

Abstract

Purpose  Cisplatin is a widely used anti-cancer drug in the treatment of a wide range of tumors; however, its application is limited by nephrotoxicity, which is affected by oxidative stress. We have reported that molecular hydrogen (H2) acts as an efficient antioxidant (Ohsawa et al. in Nat Med 13:688–694, 2007). Here we show that hydrogen efficiently mitigates the side effects of cisplatin by reducing oxidative stress.

Methods  Mice were administered cisplatin followed by inhaling hydrogen gas (1% H2 in air). Furthermore, instead of inhaling hydrogen gas, we examined whether drinking water containing hydrogen (hydrogen water; 0.8 mM H2 in water) is applicable by examining oxidative stress, mortality, and body-weight loss. Nephrotoxicity was assessed by morphological changes, serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels.

Results  Inhalation of hydrogen gas improved mortality and body-weight loss caused by cisplatin, and alleviated nephrotoxicity. Hydrogen was detected in blood when hydrogen water was placed in the stomach of a rat. Consuming hydrogen water ad libitum also reduced oxidative stress, mortality, and body-weight loss induced by cisplatin in mice. Hydrogen water improved metamorphosis accompanying decreased apoptosis in the kidney, and nephrotoxicity as assessed by serum creatinine and BUN levels. Despite its protective effects against cisplatin-induced toxicity, hydrogen did not impair anti-tumor activity of cisplatin against cancer cell lines in vitro and tumor-bearing mice in vivo.

Conclusion  Hydrogen has potential for improving the quality of life of patients during chemotherapy by efficiently mitigating the side effects of cisplatin.

 

Molecular hydrogen is protective against 6-hydroxydopamine-induced nigrostriatal degeneration in a rat model of Parkinson’s disease.

Molecular hydrogen serves as an antioxidant that reduces hydroxyl radicals, but not the other reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. In the past year, molecular hydrogen has been reported to prevent or ameliorate eight diseases in rodents and one in human associated with oxidative stress. In Parkinson’s disease, mitochondrial dysfunction and the associated oxidative stress are major causes of dopaminergic cell loss in the substantia nigra. We examined effects of approximately 50%-saturated molecular hydrogen in drinking water before or after the stereotactic surgery on 6-hydroxydopamine-induced nigrostrital degeneration in a rat model of Parkinson’s disease. Methamphetamine-induced behavioral analysis showed that molecular hydrogen prevented both the development and progression of the nigrostrital degeneration. Tyrosine hydroxylase staining of the substantia nigra and striatum also demonstrated that pre- and post-treatment with hydrogen prevented the dopaminergic cell loss. Our studies suggest that hydrogen water is likely able to retard the development and progression of Parkinson’s disease.

Abstract

PURPOSE. Retinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury by transient elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP) is known to induce neuronal damage through the generation of reactive oxygen species. Previous studies indicate that molecular hydrogen (H2) is an efficient antioxidant gas that selectively reduces the hydroxyl radical ( OH) and suppresses oxidative stress-induced injury in several organs. This study was conducted to explore the neuroprotective effect of H2-loaded eye drops on retinal I/R injury.

Active oxygen species or free radicals are considered to cause extensive oxidative damage to biological macromolecules, which brings about a variety of diseases as well as aging. The ideal scavenger for active oxygen should be ‘active hydrogen’. ‘Active hydrogen’ can be produced in reduced water near the cathode during electrolysis of water. Reduced water exhibits high pH, low dissolved oxygen (DO), extremely high dissolved molecular hydrogen (DH), and extremely negative redox potential (RP) values. Strongly electrolyzed-reduced water, as well as ascorbic acid, (+)-catechin and tannic acid, completely scavenged O.-2 produced by the hypoxanthine-xanthine oxidase (HX-XOD) system in sodium phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of reduced water is stable at 4 degrees C for over a month and was not lost even after neutralization, repeated freezing and melting, deflation with sonication, vigorous mixing, boiling, repeated filtration, or closed autoclaving, but was lost by opened autoclaving or by closed autoclaving in the presence of tungsten trioxide which efficiently adsorbs active atomic hydrogen. Water bubbled with hydrogen gas exhibited low DO, extremely high DH and extremely low RP values, as does reduced water, but it has no SOD-like activity. These results suggest that the SOD-like activity of reduced water is not due to the dissolved molecular hydrogen but due to the dissolved atomic hydrogen (active hydrogen). Although SOD accumulated H2O2 when added to the HX-XOD system, reduced water decreased the amount of H2O2 produced by XOD. Reduced water, as well as catalase and ascorbic acid, could directly scavenge H2O2. Reduced water suppresses single-strand breakage of DNA b active oxygen species produced by the Cu(II)-catalyzed oxidation of ascorbic acid in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting that reduced water can scavenge not only O2.- and H2O2, but also 1O2 and .OH.

It has long been established that reactive oxygen species (ROS) cause many typesof damage to biomolecules and cellular structures, that, in turn result in the development of a variety of pathologic states such as diabetes, cancer and aging. Reduced water is defined as anti-oxidative water produced by reduction of water. Electrolyzed reduced water (ERW) has been demonstrated to be hydrogen-rich water and can scavenge ROS in vitro (Shirahata et al., 1997). The reduction of proton in water to active hydrogen (atomic hydrogen, hydrogen radical) that can scavenge ROS is very easily caused by a weak current, compared to oxidation of hydroxyl ion to oxygen molecule. Activation of water by magnetic field, collision, minerals etc. will also produce reduced water containing active hydrogen and/or hydrogen molecule. Several natural waters such as Hita Tenryosui water drawn from deep underground in Hita city in Japan, Nordenau water in Germany and Tlacote water in Mexico are known to alleviate various diseases. We have developed a sensitive method by which we can detect active hydrogen existing in reduced water, and have demonstrated that not only ERW but also natural reduced waters described above contain active hydrogen and scavenge ROS in cultured cells. ROS is known to cause reduction of glucose uptake by inhibiting the insulin-signaling pathway in cultured cells. Reduced water scavenged intracellular ROS and stimulated glucose uptake in the presence or absence of insulin in both rat L6 skeletal muscle cells and mouse 3T3/L1 adipocytes. This insulin-like activity of reduced water was inhibited by wortmannin that is specific inhibitor of PI-3 kinase, a key molecule in insulin signaling pathways. Reduced water protected insulin-responsive cells from sugar toxicity and improved the damaged sugar tolerance of type 2 diabetes model mice, suggesting that reduced water may improve insulin-independent diabetes mellitus. Cancer cells are generally exposed to high oxidative stress. Reduced water cause impaired tumor phenotypes of human cancer cells, such as reduced growth rate, morphological changes, reduced colony formation ability in soft agar, passage number-dependent telomere shortening, reduced binding abilities of telomere binding proteins and suppressed metastasis. Reduced water suppressed the growth of cancer cells transplanted into mice, demonstrating their anti-cancer effects in vivo. Reduced water will be applicable to not only medicine but also food industries, agriculture, and manufacturing industries.

CHAPTER ONE : The Genesis of Water

The birth of the earth is supposed to have come about by means of a “big bang” that occurred between 10 and 20 billion years ago. It is also believed that the first living organisms came out into existence in the water of this planet some four billion years ago. In other words, if water had not been present on the earth some four billion years ago, living organisms would not have emerged and survived on the earth. Therefore the presence of water on the earth was the great prerequisite for the genesis and survival of all living organisms.

Everyone knows that water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen. The bonding of hydrogen and oxygen in a 2 to 1 ratio produces water, which is expressed with the chemical formula H2O. The fact that water is a compound of hydrogen and oxygen signifies that hydrogen and oxygen attract one another. In other words, if hydrogen and oxygen did not have this attraction, water would never have come into existence. Moreover, without the genesis of water, living organisms would not have come into existence either. There is an energy that works to draw these atoms to each other (covalent bond energy), and it is thanks to this energy that water was able to come into existence.

Because water is what is generated by means of this covalent bond energy, the hydrogen in the water can not exist alone and independently in a form that is separate from the oxygen. Not only that, when water is infused with hydrogen gas taken from something like a compressed gas cylinder, or when hydrogen gas is generated by electrolysis to produce water with increased hydrogen (electrolyzed cathodic water), the hydrogen simply escapes into the air immediately because it is the lightest gas in the universe. This is why, as we learned in high school chemistry, there is hardly any hydrogen in water.

As such, the water we are familiar with is all water that contains hardly any Hydrogen gas. In short, the water that exists in nature, the tap water produced by processing it, bottled water and so forth all have one big common characteristic: they are all “water that contains hardly any hydrogen.”

CHAPTER TWO : The Genesis of Living Organisms

As mentioned in the previous chapter, living organisms first came into existence in water some four billion years ago. This tells us that the necessary condition for the genesis and survival of living organisms must lie in water. In other words, if this condition were not found in water, living organisms would not have been able to come into existence and survive in water. In other words, we must conclude that the key to the genesis and survival of them or good health and longevity of living organisms is undoubtedly to be found in water.

In reality, what is the conventional wisdom concerning this topic? It would probably be, “The key to good health and longevity couldn’t be found in water!…” All I can say, however, is that this sort of thinking is in fact sheer nonsense. It is nothing but an irrational opinion that ignores the truth about the health and longevity of living organisms.

In my view, we cannot help but conclude that the key to the genesis and survival of living organisms, namely our own health and longevity, is to be found in water. No other way of thinking could explain the fact that the genesis and survival of living organisms in water has been repeating itself for some four billion years on a continuous basis.

Taking it back a step, this is not even a question of health and illness, because if water had not existed on the earth, and the key to health and longevity were not to be found in water, all living organisms would not have come into being to start with. Therefore, what we have to think about now are the following questions, which are the only relevant issues.

  1. What kind of water would be water that maintains good health and cures disease?
  2. And conversely, what kind of water would be water that is detrimental to health and produces disease?

These are questions that are most important for us to consider, rather than repeating the generally held conventional wisdom “The key to good health and longevity couldn’t be found in water”.

CHAPTER THREE : Water That Produces Disease

As mentioned in the preface, I have concluded that water can be divided into two kinds: water that produces disease and water that prevents and cures disease. First, I shall explain about water that produces disease.

“Water that produces disease” refers to the water we drink everyday without much thought. This includes tap water, well water, rain water, water from lakes and mountain streams, underground water and spring water. In short, it is the water we usually call natural water or spring water. Even tap water is really natural water if you consider where it comes from. It is simply natural water that has undergone processing at a water purification plant, where it is infused with chlorine or ozone gas to disinfect it.

The various kinds of bottled water sold in convenience stores and supermarkets, such as natural water, spring water, mineral water, famous waters from various regions all over Japan, famous name-brand water and so forth also fall into the same category. In other words, 99.9 percent of the water we drink on a daily basis is in fact nothing more than this water that produces disease.

Why am I able to make this statement? And what on earth are the characteristics of ” water that produces disease ?”

Put simply, the most important characteristic is the fact that such water hardly contains any hydrogen; in the water found in nature, there is almost no hydrogen gas. The reason for this, as mentioned earlier, is that although water is composed of two hydrogens and one oxygen, the action of covalent energy operating between the hydrogen and oxygen makes it extremely difficult for hydrogen to exist on its own in a form that is separate from oxygen and independent of the oxygen. Furthermore, water containing abundant hydrogen does not exist in nature because even water that starts out containing abundant hydrogen loses it immediately. This means that up to 99.9 percent of the water in nature is nothing but ” hydrogen poor water.”

This hydrogen poor water is none other than the “water that produces disease.”

The reason is that hydrogen (active hydrogen) is necessary to getting rid of active oxygen, which is the cause of all kinds of diseases, and hydrogen poor water is water that is deprived of this crucial hydrogen that is essential for removing active oxygen. In other words, it is extremely ineffective in getting rid of active oxygen, and it follows that hydrogen poor water is none other than water that produces disease.

CHAPTER FOUR : Water That Cures Disease

We have seen that water that produces disease refers to hydrogen poor water. On the other hand, water that prevents and cures disease refers to water that contains a lot of hydrogen, namely, Hydrogen Enriched Water. ( Please note that hydrogen poor and hydrogen enriched water are terms I have coined.) The basis for this, in brief, is that the abundant hydrogen found in Hydrogen Enriched Water becomes active hydrogen in the body and removes the active oxygen that is considered to be the cause of all kinds of diseases.

In recent times practically everyone has seen or heard, on television, radio, newspapers and health magazines, the expression “active oxygen is the cause of all kinds of diseases.” Active oxygen is exactly what the words include: oxygen that is active.

The action of oxygen is oxidation, which means that it burns things up or produces rust on metals such as iron and copper. Active oxygen thus means oxygen with a particularly strong oxidizing action. Expressed metaphorically, if we compare the oxygen we normally breathe to kerosene, active oxygen would correspond to gasoline. A simple explanation of the expression “active oxygen is the cause of all kinds of diseases” is that because active oxygen has a particularly strong oxidizing action (oxidative damage) on genes (DNA), it damages the genes and causes diseases.

Life is maintained in our body by the metabolism in which the oxygen we breathe in through our lungs burns up the food we take in through our mouths, and the byproduct of this process is active oxygen, which is emitted as a kind of combustion gas.

Let us describe this reaction, in which the air we take in through our lungs “oxidizes” our food, from the viewpoint of the food. What happens is that the food “reduces” the oxygen. The ordinary oxygen that is reduced by the food becomes active oxygen. We maintain our lives by breathing oxygen; however, since it is believed that around two percent of the oxygen we breathe in is transformed into active oxygen, we cannot avoid producing active oxygen as long as we are alive. Therefore to preserve our health it is necessary to suppress the active oxygen that we are constantly producing and the trump card in doing this is hydrogen enriched water.

CHAPTER FIVE : What Is Active Oxygen

Active oxygen is something like the exhaust fumes produced by automobile engines. If we liken gasoline to food and air to oxygen, active oxygen would correspond to the exhaust fumes produced after the gasoline has combusted.

As already mentioned, it is believed that in burning up our food, around two percent of the oxygen we breathe in through our lungs becomes active oxygen. We breathe about twenty times per minute, and active oxygen is being produced in our bodies each time we breathe. Since the volume of air we breathe in with each breath is 500 cc, we are breathing in about 10,000 cc of air per minute. As twenty percent of this air, or 2,000 cc, consists of oxygen, two percent of this amount, or 40 cc, becomes active oxygen. Thus, each minute about 40 cc of active oxygen is being produced in our bodies. This amounts to 24,000 cc per hour and 57,600 cc per day of active oxygen.

Considering this moment-by-moment production of large amounts of active oxygen in our bodies, it is no wonder that we tend to fall prey to disease. We, on the other hand, have in our bodies several enzymes, such as SOD(superoxide dismutase), catalase and glutathione peroxidase, which remove this active oxygen. As we get older, however, the function of these enzymes alone becomes insufficient to dispose of the active oxygen effectively. As a result, we fall to prey to various diseases. This means thatif we could dispose of the “active oxygen” effectively, we would be able to achieve good health and longevity.

The functional mechanism of active oxygen is oxidation. In order to suppress the (particularly strong) oxidizing function of active oxygen, it follows that we require a substance that has the opposite function to oxidation. The opposite function to oxidation is reduction, and reduction originally refers to the function of hydrogen. Consequently, we can say that the originator of reduction is none other than hydrogen.

CHAPTER SIX : What Is Active Hydrogen

It turns out that the true form of reduction is the function of hydrogen. Incidentally, various substances have been proposed as substances capable of removing active oxygen; that is, substances with reduction effect (antioxidants). Among these, the most effective one is undoubtedly active hydrogen. The other so-called antioxidant substances cannot compare to it.

As mentioned previously, active oxygen is oxygen with a particularly strong oxidizing function. What we normally call “hydrogen” refers to molecular hydrogen or H2.

In contrast, atomic hydrogen or H is specially called “active hydrogen” because it has a particularly strong reducing function. Let us look at Table 1 in the last section of this booklet.

The water around us (such as tap water) is hydrogen poor water, but if you infuse this water with hydrogen gas taken from a hydrogen gas cylinder, it can reach up to a value of 1.49 ppm (hydrogen saturated water). Meanwhile, by inserting the hydrogen producing mineral stick into the same water, you can obtain water that is abundant in hydrogen, which I call Hydrogen Enriched Water.

Now, what happens when we incorporate Hydrogen Rich Water into our everyday lives ? In a nutshell, there will be a huge decrease in our probability of getting sick (disease).

Why is it possible to make this statement? Because the thinking goes as follows:

When Hydrogen Rich Water, water rich in molecular hydrogen, enters our body, this molecular hydrogen is broken down into atomic hydrogen in the body. The active hydrogen bonds with active oxygen (thought to cause all kinds of diseases) to produce safe, nontoxic water that leaves the body in the form of urine and sweat.

In short, we may consider that when Hydrogen Rich Water enters our body, it gets rid of the active oxygen that is produced in the body from moment to moment. Therefore there is a significant decrease in our probability of getting sick.

CHAPTER SEVEN : What Are Hydrogenases

Hydrogenases are enzymes that can reversibly split molecular hydrogen to produce atomic hydrogen. It is believed that we apparently have such hydrogenases in our bodies. Incidentally, all living organisms on this earth, both plant and animal, are termed “DNA organisms.” This means that all living organisms on the earth share common ancestor. I will now write about our ancestor born 3.8 billion years ago.

In 1997, an article called “Biological Activation of Hydrogen” by R.P. Happe of Amsterdam University was submitted in the English Journal” “Nature”, Vol. 385, pp 126,’97. The main thrust of this article is as follows:

Hydrogenases are enzymes that can reversibly split molecular hydrogen. …the crystal structure of a Ni/Fe hydrogenase (from the bacterium Desulfovibrio gigas) was reported. …Ni/Fe hydrogenases are among the oldest enzymes (3.8 billion years old), demonstrating that early life forms had developed an effective way to activate molecular hydrogen at ambient temperature and pH…

My own explanation of this article is as follows.

  1. It is active oxygen that threatens the survival of living organisms.
  2. For living organisms to survive, it was necessary to develop a mechanism for    scavenging active oxygen.
  3. The best way to scavenge active oxygen is by means of atomic (active) hydrogen.
  4. To produce atomic (active) hydrogen, it is necessary to split molecular hydrogen.
  5. The hydrogenase developed by bacteria 3.8 billion years ago, was an enzyme that split   molecular to produce atomic hydrogen.

We have seen, then,  that to ensure their own survival, it was necessary for living organisms to achieve the ability to produce active hydrogen in order to scavenge active oxygen; hydrogenase developed by the oldest bacteria 3.8 billion years old was one of theses enzymes. Moreover, we may consider that this hydrogenase was the ancestor found in the bodies of higher creatures including ourselves.

CHAPTER EIGHT : Making Hydrogen-Rich Water

Now we will talk about the actual method of making Hydrogen Rich Water. The well known method in Japan is the electrolysis of water (the principle of water electrolysis is to split water, a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, back into original hydrogen and oxygen.). The two kinds of water obtained by this process have been called ionized alkaline water (water with increased hydrogen) and ionized acidic water (water with increased oxygen), which you have probably heard of.

I studied electrolyzed water for many years, and it is true that this cathodic water contains a large amount of hydrogen immediately after it is produced. However, since hydrogen is the lightest element in the universe, this water loses its hydrogen rapidly, and in 2001 it was revealed that it reverts to ordinary water only several minutes after it is produced. Therefore I decided to call this cathodic water “Temporarily Hydrogen Rich Water ” ( hydrogen rich only directly after electrolysis ).

In contrast, the water I have named “Constantly Hydrogen Rich Water”, and which I am now presenting as a new proposal, is water obtained according to chemical formula written below. It is a reaction in which magnesium metal reacts with water to produce magnesium hydroxide, while producing at the same time atomic hydrogen which then makes molecular hydrogen.

Mg + 2H2O → Mg(OH)2 + 2H → Mg(OH)2 + H2
Mg = Magnesium Metal H2O = Water
Mg(OH)2 = Magnesium Hydroxide H = Atomic Hydrogen (Active Hydrogen)
H2 = Molecular Hydrogen (Hydrogen Gas)

Incidentally, general textbooks say that magnesium does not react with cold water or room-temperature water. Actually, however, we have verified experimentally that magnesium reacts well even with cold water to produce hydrogen gas.

That is, the “blackish brown, bad-smelling, hard, heavy feces” of the tap water days changed to “light brown, soft, light feces without a strong bad odor,” similar to the bowel movements that appear in the diapers of a breastfed baby.

We adults tend to think that it is natural for adults feces to have a bad smell, but this is actually a great misconception. Every breastfeeding mother knows from her experience that when her baby has light- colored soft stool with very little bad odor, she can be sure that the baby is healthy, drinking plenty of breast milk, and growing well. On the other hand, when the baby has “blackish,bad-smelling,hard stool,” the baby is cranky and feverish, and sometimes vomits up milk.

The condition of producing offensive feces is generally called abnormal fermentation of gastrointestinal tract, which indicates the opposite of normal fermentation, but, simply put, it is “decay.”

In other words, if the food we take in by mouth has a rotten smell (bad smell) when it is excreted from the anus, this means abnormal fermentation has taken place. Let us look at a simple explanation concerning the substances that cause disgusting feces brought about by abnormal gastrointestinal fermentation (See Illustration 1).

Some of the substances that cause disgusting feces are hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, histamine, indole, phenol or nitrosamine, all of which are toxic, pathogenic, substances.

  • Hydrogen Sulfide : A strongly toxic substance with a distinctive rotten-egg odor.
  • Ammonia : A strongly toxic substance with a distinctive irritating odor commonly found in public toilets.
  • Histamine : A substance that triggers allergic conditions.
  • Indole : A toxic, carcinogenic substances with a smell like rotten onions.
  • Phenol : Recognized to be carcinogens due to carbolic acid.
  • Nitrosamine : Known as a first-class carcinogen.

CHAPTER TEN : Modern Medicine Is Nothing But ‘Downstream’ Medicine

I have concluded that modern medicine is nothing more than “medicine to alleviate downstream pollution while leaving upstream pollution alone.” Let me explain the basis of this argument.

When we digest the food we take in by mouth in our stomach and intestines, these digested nutrients are absorbed through the intestinal walls. The nutrients absorbed through the intestinal walls pass through the portal veins and are carried to the liver in that order. The nutrients that are carried to the liver undergo various metabolic processes, after which they pass through the hepatic vein into vena cava inferior and carried to the organs all over the body by general circulation.

That is to say, they are transported in this order: liver → hepatic vein → vena cava inferior → general circulation → organs all over the body. As a whole, the order is: digestive system → portal vein → liver → organs all over the body.

If we think of the liver as a kind of “checkpoint station,” the parts of the process that occur before reaching the liver can be referred to as “upstream,” and the parts that take place after leaving the liver as “downstream.”

As shown in Illustration 2, the portion from the mouth to the liver can be called as “upstream” ( Lake Ontario : checkpoint before liver) while the organs that come after the liver can be as called as “downstream” (River Saint Lawrence : checkpoint after liver). Looking at metabolism this way, we see that when the “upstream” is polluted, the “downstream” will become polluted as well. Thus, the disease-causing substances of upstream will cause diseases of downstream.

Now I think you understand my statement that “Modern Medicine is medicine to alleviate downstream pollution while leaving upstream pollution alone.” What, then, does “upstream pollution” mean?

It means “production of offensive feces” by “abnormal gastrointestinal fermentation.” Because the substances that cause offensive feces are substances that result from the putrefaction of protein (eggs, fish or meat), they are called “putrefied metabolites.” In short, it is as if people who always excrete offensive feces were eating rotten eggs, fish and meat everyday. The difference is that if they were eating rotten food, they would get sick immediately, while in this case the food rots after they eat it, so it takes more time for them to get sick. Therefore, it is important to lead a lifestyle which does not produce offensive feces. But now we have what can change offensive feces into clean feces as if by magic, that is Hydrogen Rich Water!

AFTERWORD

When Hydrogen Rich Water can be obtained simply, reliably and cheaply, I think the world will change dramatically. That is, maintaining good health and preventing disease will no longer be considered topics worth discussing, and people will not constantly be making a fuss of diseases (“It’s cancer!” “It’s diabetes!” “It’s hay fever!”) as is presently the case.

Also, if you have drunk a little too much alcohol or smoked a little too much, or don’t feel well, or seem to be catching a cold, or have caught influenza, it would be easy to get rid of the symptoms simply by consciously increasing your intake of Hydrogen Rich Water.

I would like to end with the philosophy I have learned from Hydrogen Rich Water during these past eighteen years. I think hydrogen should be called “the source.” That is to say, hydrogen, the element with the atomic number One, is the “source” of all the other elements, and the sun, which nurtures all things with its solar energy, is actually a big ball of hydrogen.

At the same time it is hydrogen atom, or active hydrogen, that protects us living organisms from disease. My conclusion follows below.

I propose that the Creator of the universe, and the Creator of all living things, created hydrogen as the first element in order to protect all its living creatures from disease.

Notes about the above:

  1. It can be said that tap water hardly contains hydrogen gas.
  2. Saturation point is obtain as hydrogen gas from gas cylinder is infused into the tap water until Hydrogen content is considered to reach its maximum (saturated) level.
  3. One, two or three sticks are inserted into the corresponding bottles filled with 1 liter of water and each hydrogen content was estimated after 12 hours passed. In November 1995 I presented a hypothesis known by the title: ˜Water  Regulating Theory (Hayashi’s Model)’ in a US health magazine. It says  that active oxygen could be scavenged or reduced by atomic hydrogen,  which results in production of H2O to give again a birthplace for every  life form.

My hypothesis was born from the clinical observation study in our  clinic. Since May 1985 we have confirmed thousands of clinical  improvements, obtained solely by exchanging drinking (as well as cooking water) from tap water to reduced water (hydrogen rich water). Those  improvements were very exciting and some of them were considered to be  miraculous at that time, when Shirahata’s paper was not yet submitted.  It should be remembered that such putrefied metabolites are the same  ones which are produced as a result of putrefaction of protein. The  difference lies only in the fact that the former putrefaction process is brought about by intestinal microbes, whereas the latter is brought  about by airborne microbes. Based on these facts, I proposed a  hypothesis Pre-and post hepatic Organ Theory’ in 1988, 1989 & 1990  at the International Symposium on Man and His Environment in Health and Disease’ held at Dallas, Texas, USA.

I stated that, as it is impossible to purify the polluted water in  the St. Laurence River without purifying the polluted water in Lake  Ontario, so it should be impossible to improve the disorders of  post hepatic organs, without trying to improve the disorder of pre hepatic organs, namely putrefaction in gastrointestinal tract. Such clinical  experiences have led us to recognize that reduced water is not only  effective for restoration of intestinal flora metabolism, but also could be effective in scavenging active oxygen. Our clinical observation  data, and my hypothesis, were delivered to Prof. Shirahata in April 1996 and his research has since started.

Shirahata’s paper means that cell metabolism, either microbial or  cancerous, depends on its intracellular water, namely cell metabolism.  This can vary according to the property of intracellular water, i.e.  hydrogen-rich or not. And even cancer cells might lose their  characteristic feature of unlimited proliferation when they are immersed in hydrogen-rich water, originated and developed in Japan, but totally  unknown in the past throughout the world. The solution might now be in  our hands. Our ‘new water’ should be the first choice for all of us to  take, as has been suggested by Happe, Shirahata and ourselves.

Case study presentations showed improvements of diabetes, hepatoma  & atopic dermatitis. Now, there could be no wonder why such clinical improvements have been obtained. In short, the ‘ invisible reaction’ of active hydrogen against active oxygen was regulated at first. As a  result of it, ‘visible reaction’, so-called clinical exam data as well  as clinical symptoms have been improved.

Water, The chemistry of life.

Whenever we attempt to determine whether there is life as we know it on Mars or other planets, scientists first seek to establish whether or not water is present. Why? Because life on earth totally depends on water.

A High percentage of living things, both plant and animal are found in water. All life on earth is thought to have arisen from water. The bodies of all living organisms are composed largely of water. About 70 to 90 percent of all organic matter is water.

The chemical reactions in all plants and animals that support life take place in a water mediumionized water. Water not only provides the medium to make these life sustaining reactions possible, but water itself is often an important reactant or product of these reactions. In short, the chemistry of life is water chemistry.

Water, the universal solvent

Water is a universal, superb solvent due to the marked polarity of the water molecule and its tendency to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules. One water molecule, expressed with the chemical symbol H2O, consists of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.

alkaline waterStanding alone, the hydrogen atom contains one positive proton at its core with one negative electron revolving around it in a three-dimensional shell. Oxygen, on the other hand, contains 8 protons in its nucleus with 8 electrons revolving around it. This is often shown in chemical notation as the letter O surrounded by eight dots representing 4 sets of paired electrons.

 The single hydrogen electron and the 8 electrons of oxygen are the key to the chemistry of life because this is where hydrogen and oxygen atoms combine to form a water molecule, or split to form ions.

 Hydrogen tends to ionize by losing its single electron and form single H+ ions, which are simply isolated protons since the hydrogen atom contains no neutrons. A hydrogen bond occurs when the electron of a single hydrogen atom is shared with another electronegative atom such as oxygen that lacks an electron.

Polarity of water molecules

In a water molecule, two hydrogen atoms are covalently bonded to the oxygen atom. But because the oxygen atom is larger than the hydrogen’s, its attraction for the hydrogen’s electrons is correspondingly greater so the electrons are drawn closer into the shell of the larger oxygen atom and away from the hydrogen shells. This means that although the water molecule as a whole is stable, the greater mass of the oxygen nucleus tends to draw in all the electrons in the molecule including the shared hydrogen electrons giving the oxygen portion of the molecule a slight electronegative charge.

ionized waterThe shells of the hydrogen atoms, because their electrons are closer to the oxygen, take on a small electropositive charge. This means water molecules have a tendency to form weak bonds with water molecules because the oxygen end of the molecule is negative and the hydrogen ends are positive.

 A hydrogen atom, while remaining covalently bonded to the oxygen of its own molecule, can form a weak bond with the oxygen of another molecule. Similarly, the oxygen end of a molecule can form a weak attachment with the hydrogen ends of other molecules. Because water molecules have this polarity, water is a continuous chemical entity.

These weak bonds play a crucial role in stabilizing the shape of many of the large molecules found in living matter. Because these bonds are weak, they are readily broken and re-formed during normal physiological reactions. The disassembly and re-arrangement of such weak bonds is in essence the chemistry of life.

salt To illustrate water’s ability to break down other substances, consider the simple example of putting a small amount of table salt in a glass of tap water. With dry salt (NaCl) the attraction between the electropositive sodium (Na+) and electronegative chlorine (Cl-) atoms of salt is very strong until it is placed in water. After salt is placed in water, the attraction of the electronegative oxygen of the water molecule for the positively charged sodium ions, and the similar attraction of the electropositive hydrogen ends of the water molecule for the negatively charged chloride ions, are greater than the mutual attraction between the outnumbered Na+ and Cl- ions. In water the ionic bonds of the sodium chloride molecule are broken easily because of the competitive action of the numerous water molecules.

 

 

As we can see from this simple example, even the delicate configuration of individual water molecules enables them to break relatively stronger bonds by converging on them. This is why we call water the universal solvent. It is a natural solution that breaks the bonds of larger, more complex molecules. This is the chemistry of life on earth, in water and on land.

Oxidation-reduction reactions

Basically, reduction means the addition of an electron (e-), and its converse, oxidation means the removal of an electron. The addition of an electron, reduction, stores energy in the reduced compound. The removal of an electron, oxidation, liberates energy from the oxidized compound. Whenever one substance is reduced, another is oxidized.

To clarify these terms, consider any two molecules, A and B, for example.

When molecules A and B come into contact, here is what happens:

B grabs an electron from molecule A.

Molecule A has been oxidized because it has lost an electron.

The net charge of B has been reduced because it has gained a negative electron (e-).

In biological systems, removal or addition of an electron constitutes the most frequent mechanism of oxidation-reduction reactions. These oxidation-reduction reactions are frequently called redox reactions.

Acids and Bases

An acid is a substance that increases the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in water. A base is a substance that decreases the concentration of hydrogen ions, in other words, increasing the concentration of hydroxide ions OH-.

The degree of acidity or alkalinity of a solution is measured in terms of a value known as pH, which is the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen ions:

pH = 1/log[H+] = -log[H+]

What is pH?

On the pH scale, which ranges from 0 on the acidic end to 14 on the alkaline end, a solution is neutral if its pH is 7. At pH 7, water contains equal concentrations of H+ and OH- ions. Substances with a pH less than 7 are acidic because they contain a higher concentration of H+ ions. Substances with a pH higher than 7 are alkaline because they contain a higher concentration of OH- than H+. The pH scale is a log scale so a change of one pH unit means a tenfold change in the concentration of hydrogen ions.

Importance of balancing pH

Living things are extremely sensitive to pH and function best (with certain exceptions, such as certain portions of the digestive tract) when solutions are nearly neutral. Most interior living matter (excluding the cell nucleus) has a pH of about 6.8.

Blood plasma and other fluids that surround the cells in the body have a pH of 7.2 to 7.3. Numerous special mechanisms aid in stabilizing these fluids so that cells will not be subject to appreciable fluctuations in pH. Substances which serve as mechanisms to stabilize pH are called buffers. Buffers have the capacity to bond ions and remove them from solution whenever their concentration begins to rise. Conversely, buffers can release ions whenever their concentration begins to fall. Buffers thus help to minimize the fluctuations in pH. This is an important function because many biochemical reactions normally occurring in living organisms either release or use up ions.

Oxygen: Too much of a good thing?

Oxygen is essential to survival. It is relatively stable in the air, but when too much is absorbed into the body it can become active and unstable and has a tendency to attach itself to any biological molecule, including molecules of healthy cells. The chemical activity of these free radicals is due to one or more pairs of unpaired electrons.

About 2% of the oxygen we normally breathe becomes active oxygen, and this amount increases to approximately 20% with aerobic exercise.

free radicalsSuch free radicals with unpaired electrons are unstable and have a high oxidation potential, which means they are capable of stealing electrons from other cells. This chemical mechanism is very useful in disinfectants such as hydrogen peroxide and ozone which can be used to sterilize wounds or medical instruments. Inside the body these free radicals are of great benefit due to their ability to attack and eliminate bacteria, viruses and other waste products.

Active Oxygen in the body

Problems arise, however, when too many of these free radicals are turned loose in the body where they can also damage normal tissue.

Putrefaction sets in when microbes in the air invade the proteins, peptides, and amino acids of eggs, fish and meat. The result is an array of unpleasant substances such as:

These substances are also produced naturally in the digestive tract when we digest food, resulting in the unpleasant odor evidenced in feces. Putrefaction of spoiled food is caused by microbes in the air; this natural process is duplicated in the digestive tract by intestinal microbes. All these waste products of digestion are pathogenic, that is, they can cause disease in the body.

 Hydrogen sulfide and ammonia are tissue toxins that can damage the liver. Histamines contribute to allergic disorders such as atopic dermatitis, urticaria (hives) and asthma. Indoles and phenols are considered carcinogenic. Because waste products such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, histamines, phenols and indoles are toxic, the body’s defense mechanisms try to eliminate them by releasing neutrophils (a type of leukocyte, or white corpuscle). These neutrophils produce active oxygen, oddball oxygen molecules that are capable of scavenging disintegrating tissues by gathering electrons from the molecules of toxic cells.

Problems arise, however, when too many of these active oxygen molecules, or free radicals, are produced in the body. They are extremely reactive and can also attach themselves to normal, healthy cells and damage them genetically. These active oxygen radicals steal electrons from normal, healthy biological molecules. This electron theft by active oxygen oxidizes tissue and can cause disease.

Because active oxygen can damage normal tissue, it is essential to scavenge this active oxygen from the body before it can cause disintegration of healthy tissue. If we can find an effective method to block the oxidation of healthy tissue by active oxygen, then we can attempt to prevent disease.

Antioxidants block dangerous oxidation

One way to protect healthy tissue from the ravages of oxidation caused by active oxygen is to provide free electrons to active oxygen radicals, thus neutralizing their high oxidation potential and preventing them from reacting with healthy tissue.

Research on the link between diet and cancer is far from complete, but some evidence indicates that what we eat may affect our susceptibility to cancer. Some foods seem to help defend against cancer, others appear to promote it.

Much of the damage caused by carcinogenic substances in food may come about because of an oxidation reaction in the cell. In this process, an oddball oxygen molecule may damage the genetic code of the cell. Some researchers believe that substances that prevent oxidation — called ANTIOXIDANTS — can block the damage. This leads naturally to the theory that the intake of natural antioxidants could be an important aspect of the body’s defense against cancer. Substances that some believe inhibit cancer include vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, selenium, and gluthione (an amino acid). These substances are reducing agents. They supply electrons to free radicals and block the interaction of the free radical with normal tissue.

How we can avoid illness

As we mentioned earlier, the presence of toxic waste products such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, histamines, indoles, phenols and scatoles impart an offensive odor to human feces. In the medical profession, it is well known that patients suffering from hepatitis and cirrhosis pass particularly odoriferous stools.

Excessively offensive stools caused by the presence of toxins are indicators of certain diseases, and the body responds to the presence of these toxins by producing neutrophil leukocytes to release active oxygen in an attempt to neutralize the damage to organs that can be caused by such waste products. But when an excess amount of such active oxygen is produced, it can damage healthy cells as well as neutralize toxins. This leads us to the conclusion that we can minimize the harmful effect of these active oxygen radicals by reducing them with an ample supply of electrons.

Water, the natural solution

There is no substitute for a healthy balanced diet, especially rich in antioxidant materials such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, and other foods that are good for us. However, these substances are not the best source of free electrons that can block the oxidation of healthy tissue by active oxygen.

Water treated by electrolysis to increase its reduction potential is the best solution to the problem of providing a safe source of free electrons to block the oxidation of normal tissue by free oxygen radicals. We believe that reduced water, water with an excess of free electrons to donate to active oxygen, is the best solution because:

The molecule weight of reduced water is low, making it fast acting and able to reach all tissues of the body in a very short time.

What is ALKALINE IONIZED WATER?

Ionized water is the product of mild electrolysis which takes place in the ionized water unit. The production of ionized water, its properties, and how it works in the human body are described in the next section. Ionized water is treated tap water that has not only been filtered, but has also been reformed in that it provides reduced water with a large mass of electrons that can be donated to active oxygen in the body to block the oxidation of normal cells.

Tap water: What it is and isn’t

Normal tap water, for example, with a pH of 7 is approximately neutral on the pH scale of 0 to 14. When measured with an ORP (oxidation potential) meter its redox potential is approximately +400 to +500 mV. Because it has a positive redox potential, it is apt to acquire electrons and oxidize other molecules. Reduced Ionized Water, on the other hand, has a negative redox potential of approximately -250 to -350 mV. This means it has a large mass of electrons ready to donate to electron-thieving active oxygen.

Before discussing the properties of Ionized Water further, let’s take a look at what happens inside an Ionized Water producing unit.

How an ALKALINE IONIZED WATER Unit Works

The Ionized Water unit, slightly taller and thicker than a large dictionary on end, is an electrical appliance connected to your kitchen water supply to perform electrolysis on tap water before you drink it or use it in the kitchen for cooking or cleaning.

A special attachment re-directs tap water out of the faucet through a plastic hose into the Ionized Water unit. Inside the Ionized Water unit, the water is first filtered through activated charcoal. Next, the filtered water passes into an electrolysis chamber equipped with a platinum-coated titanium electrode where electrolysis takes place.

Cations, positive ions, gather at the negative electrodes to create cathodic water (reduced water). Anions, negatively charged ions, gather at the positive electrode to make anodic water (oxidized water).

Through electrolysis, reduced water not only gains an excess amount of electrons (e-), but the cluster of H 2O seem to be reduced in size from about 10 to 13 molecules per cluster to 5 to 6 molecules per cluster.

The reduced water comes out of the faucet, and the oxidized water comes out of a separate hose leading into the sink. You can use the reduced water for drinking or cooking. The oxidation potential of the oxidized water makes it a good sterilizing agent, ideal for washing hands, cleaning food or kitchen utensils, and treating minor wounds.

After electrolysis of the water inside the Ionized Water unit, reduced water comes out of the cathodic side and oxidized water comes out of the anodic side. Compare these measurements of these three types of water: tap water before electrolysis, the reduced water, and the oxidized water.

Redox potential, not pH, is the crucial factor

Traditionally we have judged the properties of water from the standpoint of pH, in other words whether water is acidic or alkaline. According to Dr. Yoshiaki Matsuo PhD., the inventor of the Ionized Water unit, “In my opinion, redox potential is more important than pH. The importance of pH is over emphasized. For example, the average pH of blood is 7.4 and acidosis or alkalosis are defined according to deviation within the range of 7.4 +- 0.005. But nothing has been discussed about ORP, or oxidation-reduction potential.

The pH of tap water is about pH 7, or neutral. When tap water is electrolyzed into Ionized Water, its reduced water has a pH of about 9 and the oxidized water a pH of about 4. Even if you make alkaline water of pH 9 by adding sodium hydroxide or make acidic water of pH 3 by adding hydrogen chloride, you will find very little change in the ORP values of the two waters. On the other hand, when you divide tap water with electrolysis you can see the ORP fluctuate by as much as +- 1,000 mV. By electrolysis we can obtain reduced water with negative potential that is good for the body.

The Ionized Water unit produces two kinds of water with different redox potentials, one with a high reduction potential and the other with a high oxidation potential.

Reduced Water

When taken internally, the reduced Ionized Water with its redox potential of -250 to -350 mV readily donates its electrons to oddball oxygen radicals and blocks the interaction of the active oxygen with normal molecules.

A biological molecule (BM) remains intact and undamaged.

Undamaged biological molecules are less susceptible to infection and disease. Ionized Water gives up an extra electron and reduces the active oxygen (AO), thus rendering it harmless. The AO is reduced without damaging surrounding biological molecules. Substances which have the ability to counteract active oxygen by supplying electrons are called scavengers. Reduced water, therefore, can be called scavenging water.

When taken internally, the effects of reduced water are immediate. Ionized Water inhibits excessive fermentation in the digestive tract by reducing indirectly metabolites such as hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, histamines, indoles, phenols and scatoles, resulting in a cleaner stool within days after reduced water is taken on a regular basis. In 1965, the Ministry of Welfare of Japan announced that reduced water obtained from electrolysis can prevent abnormal fermentation of intestinal microbes.

Oxidized Water

Oxidized water with its redox potential of +700 to +800 mV is an oxidizing agent that can withdraw electrons from bacteria and kill them. The oxidized water from the Ionized Water unit can be used to clean hands, kitchen utensils, fresh vegetables and fruits, and to sterilize cutting boards and minor wounds. Tests have shown that oxidized water can be used effectively to treat athlete’s foot, minor burns, insect bites, scratches, and so on.

Dr. Yoshiaki Matsuo, Vice Director of the Water Institute of Japan, has developed another apparatus capable of producing hyperoxidized water with a redox potential of +1,050 mV or more, and a pH lower than 2.7. Tests have shown that this hyper oxidized water can quickly destroy MRSA (Methecillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).

Although hyperoxidized water is a powerful sterilizing agent, it won’t harm the skin. In fact, it can be used to heal. Hyperoxidized water has proven effective in Japanese hospitals in the treatment of bedsores and operative wounds with complicated infections.

But perhaps the most exciting future application of hyperoxidized water is in the field of agriculture where it has been used effectively on plants to kill fungi and other plant diseases. Hyperoxidized water is non-toxic, so agricultural workers can apply it without wearing special protective equipment because there is no danger of skin or respiratory damage. An added benefit of using hyperoxidized water to spray plants is that there is no danger to the environment caused by the accumulation of toxic chemicals in the ground.

Ionized Alkaline Water superior to antioxidant diet

Today we read much about correct dieting principles and paying attention to what we eat in order to stay healthy. This is a sensible practice, but it is surprising that many of us don’t realize that the bulk of what eat is composed of water. Vegetables and fruits are 90% water; fish and meat are about 70% water as well.

Even advocates of the importance of vitamin C in diet staples have to admit that its potency, namely, the redox potential of this important vitamin, rapidly diminishes with age and preparation for the dining table. Carbohydrates, the main consistent of vegetables and fruit, has a molecular weight of 180 whereas water has a much lower molecular weight of 18.

Ionized Water, with its low molecular weight and high reduction potential, makes it a superior scavenging agent of active oxygen. But electrolysis inside the Ionized Water unit not only charges the reduced water with electrons, it also reduces the size of reduced water molecule clusters.

reduced waterNMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) analysis reveals that tap water and well water consists of clusters of 10 to 13 H2 0 molecules. Electrolysis of water in the Ionized Water unit reduces these clusters to about half their normal size — 5 to 6 water molecules per cluster.

As the graph shows, the NMR signal that measures cluster size by line width at half-amplitude shows 65 Hz for reduced water and 133 Hz for tap water, revealing that the reduced water clusters are approximately half the size of tap water clusters.

According to Dr. Hidemitsu Hayashi, Director of the Water Institute of Japan, “To eliminate the pollutants in a large stream that is contaminated at its source, we must work on the problems upstream at the headwaters — the source of the pollution — not downstream where we can only try to treat the evidence of damage caused by the pollution. Ionized Water’s contribution to preventive medicine is essentially upstream treatment.”

According to our model, we consider the digestive tract upstream where we intake water and food. Although many people today in developed countries are growing more skeptical about what they eat, they tend to concentrate more on what the food contains rather than the metabolized products of foods in the digestive tract.

Meat protein is metabolized into amines while nitrates from fertilizers used to grow vegetables metabolize into nitrites in the digestive tract. These amines and nitrites combine to form nitrosamine, a recognized carcinogen.

We’ve already discussed that odoriferous feces are evidence of excessive fermentation in the digestive tract, so reduced water performs a very important function upstream in the digestive tract by reducing this excessive fermentation as evidenced by cleaner stools within days of starting a steady regimen of reduced water.

Downstream from the digestive tract, starting at the liver, reduced water quickly enters the liver and other organs due to, first, its lower molecular weight, and, secondly, the size of its clusters. At tissue sites throughout the body, reduced water with its safe, yet potent reduction potential readily donates its passenger electrons freely to active oxygen and neutralizes them so they cannot damage the molecules of healthy cells. Normal cells are protected from the electron thievery of active oxygen and allowed to grow, mature, function and regenerate without interference from rogue, oddball oxygen radicals which tend to steal the electrons from the molecules of normal, healthy biological molecules.

The water boom

We are now in the midst of a water boom. In Japan and other countries consumers are buying various kinds of bottled and canned water even though water is one of our most abundant vital resources. Research data reveals that mineral waters have an ORP of +200 mV, slightly lower than the +400 mV measured for ordinary tap water. We can say that at least mineral water is marginally better than tap water from the viewpoint of ORP. Compared to any processed water for sale, however, Ionized Water with its reduction potential of -250 to -300 mV is beyond comparison due to its ability to scavenge active oxygen radicals.
